Petersfield may be small, but it’s bursting with brilliant foodie spots — and with summer just around the corner, there’s no better excuse to pack up a picnic and enjoy the sunshine. Whether you bring a homemade feast or pick up a gourmet takeaway from one of the town’s fabulous cafés, here are a few of our favourite picnic spots to discover. Bon appétit! ☀️🧺
📍 St Peter’s Church Yard
What to eat: Visit Petersfield’s Wednesday or Saturday market and fill your basket with delicious local produce for the ultimate homemade picnic spread. Think artisan breads, fresh cheeses, sweet treats and more — picnic perfection!
Where to picnic: From The Square, wander towards the church and follow the path around to the south side of the building near St Peter’s Road. You’ll find peaceful sunny spots tucked away beside the churchyard, often accompanied by the gentle sound of choir rehearsals or church bells in the background.
📍 The Heath
What to eat: Stop by The Plump Duck and grab one of their freshly made paninis — the Brie & Bacon is a local favourite — plus a cold drink to enjoy by the water.
Where to picnic: Ask any Petersfield local where to picnic and chances are they’ll point you straight to The Heath. With its beautiful pond, scenic boardwalk and abundance of wildlife, it’s the perfect place to relax, refuel and perhaps enjoy a stroll afterwards.
📍 The Physic Garden
What to eat: Head to Madeleine’s Kitchen for fresh deli sandwiches and expertly brewed coffee. Their Hot Salt Beef on Rye and Tuna Mayonnaise are both excellent picnic choices.
Where to picnic: Hidden away just off the High Street, this volunteer-run garden is a peaceful oasis filled with colourful borders, sunny corners and quiet benches. It’s the ideal spot for a slower-paced lunch break. If you can, consider leaving a small donation to support this much-loved community space.
