When you see the news headlines that plastic pollution is being found in the artic and then you see plastic litter surrounding you at your local park / beach or woods, it’s hard to turn a blind eye to just how much our planet is being consumed by plastic. In 2021, 2.5 million metric tons of plastic packaging waste were generated in the UK. From that, only 12% was recycled. The rest was landfilled, incinerated for energy in the UK. You would think that with all of the recycling systems throughout the UK provided by our councils, that the amount recycled would be higher right? Unfortunately, not, Why? I believe it’s due to there being so many different forms of plastic being used and they aren’t all recyclable, which is confusing for the public. It also doesn’t help that all of the councils have different forms of recycling too.
It’s also been highlighted in past documentaries (War on Waste on BBC1) that some councils have been found to be exporting plastics abroad to be burnt, this isn’t necessarily their fault. Either way, this is proof that our recycling system isn’t working in its current system.
That’s why Refilling is the answer, it is our aim at Refill and Replenish to help you reduce your consumption of particularly ‘single use plastic’ by offering a wide range of products for your home that are refilled at our shop. Would you like to be part of the Refill revolution? Then let’s start with what to bring to refill. You can bring Tupperware, jam jars, old freezer bags, old squash bottles basically any container really, we just ask that you ensure that it fits on our scales and that the containers are clean and dry. BUT don’t fret if you forget your containers, we will always have paper bags which are free for you to use as well as a range of bottles to purchase for liquid refills.
When you come into store find one of our scales and weigh your container, use the pens provided to write the weight onto your container. Then fill the containers with what you would like, remember you can put in as little or as much as you like. We are happy to show you how to use our food containers if it’s a little daunting too. Then, take your filled containers to the till and we will weigh them and take off the weight that you wrote on them, then you pay for the products.
That’s it, you have now reduced your use of single use plastics by refilling! Simple. By refilling (for example) your washing up liquid bottle time and again you are saving having to buy numerous amounts of bottles and then for those bottles to go into the ‘recycling’ system that is broken. Just think about all the items that you could refill and save moving forward? We are here to help you live a life with less plastic by refilling, we hope this has helped you take the next step into refilling and we shall look forward to seeing you at the shop.
Thank you to Refill and Replenish for giving us an amazing view into the sustainable world. Make sure to head to their page and support them this year to make a difference in town.
